When I downloaded the audiobook to “Can’t Hurt Me” by David Goggins, I thought it was going to be another self-help book preaching the importance of hard work and consistency.

And in some ways, it is. But what really made this book stand out to me was the personal nature of the story. Goggins depicts his own struggles as a child, teenager, Navy seal, ultra-marathoner, and more, as well as how he overcame these obstacles through the power of his mind.

Self-help these days can be very informative, but without applying the lessons that these books teach us, we get stuck in an endless loop of consumption.

Recently, I had fallen into the trap of reading self-help books as entertainment, under the illusion that I was being productive. The truth is, most self-help books preach similar ideas. But if we don’t apply these lessons to our lives, that information is never transformed into knowledge. Instead, the words and ideas that we consume remain just that —ideas.

The reason that this book inspired me was because it made me realize that I am capable of far more than I had previously thought possible.

But once I wrote these limitations down on paper, I saw that I was the only one…
