Everybody faces challenges, but what differentiates successful people from those who settle for mediocrity is one thing: the ability to focus on what is in your control.

Think about somebody you look up to. How do they respond to challenges? Do they complain endlessly about the size of the obstacle? Do they reinforce how helpless they feel?

No, or you probably wouldn’t look up to them.

Successful people are able to respond to their challenges because they know to focus only on what is completely under their control: their mindset, perceptions, attitude, and actions.

Things like other people’s perceptions of you, the economy, or who the president is, are not under your control (Unless you are a billionaire or a member of Congress, then you may have a tiny fraction of control over these things. And in that case, welcome, I’m honored that you’re here reading my article).

But for most people, focusing on what is out of our control is harmful and detrimental to progress. It scatters our energy to the wrong places.

When you face an obstacle, you have two options:

  1. Accept that it exists.
