How to Stop Splurging on Material Goods

It is exhausting to keep up with trends.

Buying the newest item, whether it’s a car, TV, or clothing item, is an endless cycle. Trends are created to be temporary.

Even knowing this on an intellectual level, I know how exciting and thrilling it feels to press checkout and know that the newest good on the market is being shipped to you.

We are convinced that we need the next big thing, but that thing is quickly replaced with a sharper, shinier, prettier version.

After all, trends exist to be replaced.

Excessive consumerism feeds into the capitalistic model, and it is an endless chase.

When we chase something, what we usually want is not that thing. We want the feeling that we associate with that thing.

For example, I want money because I can use that money to feel safe, secure, and free. Making money also brings me joy because it is a testament to my ability to practice patience and perseverance.

However, having that number in the bank is meaningless without the feeling that is attached to it.
